What’s more important? A little girl or a Korean madman? Here are some child sexual abuse stats.
I don’t know how many security-camera images of little girls like Sandra Cantu I can bear. Why can’t this country dedicate its energies to saving children from predators? These children are our future. And right now the future looks pretty “unthinkable.”
Yes, I’m worried about the North Koreans. But I’m much more worried about American children.
Find this little girl.
Does it seem to you as if this sort of horror is happening more often these days? It is. TRUTV summarized recent statistics (here). Sexual assault against children is rising. Ninety percent of the monsters who do this are never sent to jail. The TRUTV article makes it clear that these hideous criminals could be identified in childhood. But we don’t pay any attention to what goes on behind closed doors of family homes.
How about this disgusting statistic? Forty percent of child abusers are under the age of 18 themselves, according the the Bureau of Justice Statistics—they are children themselves. Again, we don’t pay any attention to what goes on behind closed doors. Victim-children can easily become child-victimizers themselves before they are old enough to understand what they are doing.
Statistics show that most abusers are acquaintances of family members of the child who is abused. (Think boyfriends of mothers and dads’ friends with whom they smoke a little “harmless” weed. Parents, wake up!)
FBI: Look for young acquaintances of Sandra’s family, under 18 or under 35. Don’t give up. She could be alive. Remember Steven Stayner? Remember Elizabeth Smart? Take a look at the ABC story. “Alleged” kidnappers? The media’s reporting of these stories exacerbates the problem.
And I’m still perplexed by the story of Jocelyn Schneider who testified in the Brandon Craig trial that her father moved her out of his house when she was 15 because he preferred to have his girlfriend live with him. This man was described by the press as “a prominent physician.” Huh?
This is just my opinion: Parents should not be permitted to have “no fault” divorces. Divorce devastates kids. I’m almost ready to say you should have to get a license to be a parent. Teachers should be vigilant to what is going on in their students' private lives. Schools should be safe havens where children can confide their fears and report abuse.
Snitches are good. Kids should snitch on their friends’ parents to school counselors.
And Illinois: Forget about Blago. Change the statutes. A 13 year old girl is a child. Set the age of "childhood" or whatever the legal term for it is at a reasonable age. I'd say 18.
